The potable water emoji was first introduced in 2010 and has both a practical, literal interpretation as well as a more general, figurative one. The Apple iOS version of this emoji is the most realistic, and shows a metallic faucet or tap with water gushing into a clear drinking tumbler. On other platforms and earlier versions, the emoji looks like a two-dimensional sign on a blue background and with the silhouette in either black or white of a faucet and water. At its most basic level, the emoji is used to show that water – or any liquid – is safe to drink. More generally and in combination with other emojis, it can imply that someone is thirsty, or is drinking a lot of water.
